Co-morbidity of Insomnia
There is a common association between insomnia and certain health conditions, specifically
Generalized Anxiety
Disorder (GAD)14-17 and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).14,18,21
Studies show that 90% of patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)15,19,22 and
44% of those with Generalized Anxiety
Disorder (GAD)16 suffer from insomnia. A majority
of these patients show sleep maintenance symptoms and pronounced functional impairment
throughout the day.15,17,18
Although effective treatments for GAD and MDD are available, like SSRIs, those treatments
alone may not sufficiently address the sleep difficulties that are often associated
with the disorders.17-19,22,23
AMBIEN CR 2-layer extended release tablets have proven effective in treating insomnia
in patients with both Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Major Depressive Disorder
(MDD).17,18,23
It’s important to note a troubling trend: only about half of those patients with
increased risk for insomnia have initiated a conversation with their health care
professional about their sleep problems.1,8,20
That means many of your patients who have trouble sleeping may not be expressing
their concerns during doctor’s visits. So it’s important for the health care professional
to initiate conversations about sleep quality and next day consequences.
