What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a nighttime sleeping problem. It may cause daytime problems, such as:
- Tiredness
- Lack of energy
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
These problems sometimes leave a person feeling out of step with what's happening around them. Lack of quality sleep can put them at risk of depression, poor health - even accidents.
People vary in their need for, and satisfaction with, sleep. Insomnia isn't only about the number of hours a person sleeps each night; rather, it is also about a person's perception that his or her sleep is inadequate. A feeling of inadequate sleep may be caused by:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Difficulty staying asleep
Insomnia is described by how long it lasts.
- Transient Insomnia: lasting for a short time
- Intermittent Insomnia: occurring on and off
- Chronic Insomnia: occurring on most nights and lasting for a month or more.
If you think insomnia is affecting your next day, use the sleep diary to track your sleep for 7 nights, then discuss your sleep patterns with your doctor to see if a prescription sleep aid, such as AMBIEN CR, is the right treatment for you.
