How AMBIEN CR Works

AMBIEN CR is a prescription sleep aid indicated for the treatment of insomnia. It's the only dual-layer tablet that works in two distinct ways:

  • The first layer dissolves quickly, to help you get to sleep fast.
  • The second layer dissolves slowly, to help you stay asleep*.

AMBIEN CR works with a natural brain chemical called GABA-one of many major brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters control communication among neighboring brain cells causing increased or decreased electrical activity.

It's believed GABA dampens electrical activity in neighboring brain cells. It is thought that AMBIEN CR works with GABA to reduce electrical activity in select brain cells.

AMBIEN CR is not chemically related to older sleep aids that affect GABA.

Laboratory studies show AMBIEN CR targets a specific area of the GABA receptor, unlike the older sleep aids which are non-selective. The result may be fewer side effects.

When taken as prescribed, AMBIEN CR may give you the good night's sleep your mind and body require.
